"It’s almost half an hour from Zhongbei Road to Zhongnan Road, and it’s only moved a few tens of meters …" At 8 o’clock in the morning on September 2, many drivers spoke through WeChat group, friends circle and Weibo. A journalist interviewed the traffic control department, the traffic police on duty on the road and parents in Wuhan, and learned that the morning and evening peak congestion on September 1 and 2 was obviously aggravated. The main reason was that primary and secondary schools and kindergartens started school in autumn, and private cars to pick up and drop off children concentrated on travel, which led to a surge in road traffic pressure.

There are three reasons for the aggravation of morning and evening rush hour congestion.
In August, affected by the summer vacation and epidemic prevention and control, the daily average traffic volume in Wuhan dropped from more than 2 million vehicles to about 1.6 million vehicles. According to analysis, as Wuhan is reduced to a low-risk area, school starts as scheduled in autumn. On the morning and evening rush hours of September 1 and 2, private cars that pick up and drop off children travel in a concentrated way, which is highly coincident with the peak of commuting. Secondly, the sudden changes in the traffic flow situation in the past two days have also made many drivers uncomfortable, leading to an increase in minor vehicle collision accidents. Third, there are many freshmen when the school starts in autumn, including those who are new to kindergarten, young to small, young to junior, and new to senior high school. As the "double reduction" measures bring about changes in school hours, some parents are not familiar with the new campus road environment and do not adapt to the new traffic and parking laws, which is also a reason for the congestion. For example, some parents don’t want to "stop and go" after sending freshmen to school, and stop for a long time to wait and see.
On September 2, the traffic control department of Wuhan introduced that after the start of school in autumn, due to the multiple factors such as the start of school season and after-school delayed service, the traffic in the city showed the characteristics of obvious increase in traffic volume in the morning and evening peak hours, high overlapping of commuting to school (especially in the evening peak hours) and longer duration of the morning and evening peak hours.
Wuhan traffic police issued travel warnings and tips: please ask the general public to choose public transportation to travel at the wrong peak as much as possible and try to avoid the two peak hours of 7: 20-8: 00 and 18: 00-18: 40; Non-school vehicles should bypass the roads around the school; Please stop and go when picking up and dropping off students’ vehicles, and don’t turn around illegally; This weekend will usher in the tide of returning to school in colleges and universities. The traffic pressure in concentrated areas of colleges and universities such as Wuchang, Hongshan and Dongxin is high, so it is unnecessary to avoid going as much as possible to avoid delaying too much time on the road.

The morning and evening peaks last longer, so please travel at the wrong peak to avoid blocking.
According to the big data of Wuhan Traffic Management, on September 1, the traffic volume on the way in the city increased the most during the morning peak from 6:00 to 7:00, and the traffic volume in the whole city and within the second and third ring roads of the city increased by 21% to 26% compared with the same period of the previous day. From 7:00 to 8:00, the traffic volume increased the most, and vehicle travel was the most concentrated. From 7:00 to 8:00 in the Third Ring Road, the traffic volume on the road increased by 254,000 compared with the previous hour, with the fastest growth rate; The morning rush hour in the Second Ring Road was 316,000 vehicles, an increase of 13,000 vehicles over the previous day.
In the evening rush hour, the traffic volume increases the most in the whole city and within the second and third ring roads of the city from 17:00 to 18:00, and the vehicle trips are the most concentrated.
On September 1st, the morning rush hour in the whole city peaked at around 8:00, and the congestion started at 7:20, 20 minutes earlier than usual, and the congestion lasted longer, extending by about 30 minutes.
On the evening of September 1st, the peak began at 17: 20 and lasted until 19:40. The peak appeared at around 18:30, and then stabilized after 20:00. Affected by the after-school delayed service, the vehicles to pick up and drop off students are highly superimposed with the commuter traffic, and the traffic pressure caused by the increase of the traffic to pick up students at night and at night is obviously aggravated.

The traffic pressure on some ring roads, interchanges and main and secondary roads is significant.
The morning rush hour congestion is mainly concentrated in the Second Ring Road, Zhuyeshan Interchange, Gusao Shulijiao Interchange, Changqing Interchange, Yuehu Bridge, Donghu Tunnel, Baishazhou Avenue, Xiongchu Avenue Elevated, Meijiashan Interchange, and the South of the Third Ring Road (Miaoshan Interchange Section).
The congestion degree of some elevated roads and interchanges, such as Fanhu Interchange, Changqing Road Elevated Road and Baofeng Road Elevated Road, has doubled; Road sections with significant pressure on primary and secondary trunk roads include Huiming Road, Swan Road, Donghu Road Auxiliary Road, Qingchuan Bridge, Zhuodaoquan North Road, Yinxingyuan Street, Wuluo Road Five Lane, Youyi Road, Swan Road Auxiliary Road, Jiaosha Road, Qunguang South Road, Wudayuan Road, Chongren Road and Vu Thang West Street.
Non-school vehicles should avoid the roads around the school as much as possible.
The areas with the most obvious traffic pressure around the school are mainly concentrated in Wuchang Fruit Lake area, Jiang ‘an Huaqiao area, Jianghan Tangjiadun area, Wuchang Liangdao Street area, Hongshan Street crossing area and some areas around schools such as Hanyang, Economic and Technological Development Zone and Dongxin.
The roads around or going to schools such as Huangpu Street in Jiang ‘an District, Wuxiang of Wuluo Road in Wuchang District, Chongren Road in Qiaokou District and Boxue Road in Economic Development Zone are obviously congested. Other roads with higher growth rates include Heng ‘an Road, Macau Road, Huangxiaohe Road, Juncai Street, Xiangfeng Road, Tangjiadun Road, Bayi Road and Baotong Temple Road, and the congestion delay index has increased by more than 70%.
In view of the travel characteristics of the autumn school season, the traffic control department suggested that the general public plan their trips in advance, avoid the rush hours and road sections, avoid the road sections around the school by non-school vehicles, and try to choose public transportation as a green way to travel.
