Xinmin Evening News (Reporter Yang Yuhong) Photographs bear the memories of generations, quietly recording the changes of the city and showing a better life. On November 12th, Shanghai: A Portrait of a World City from 1991 to 2021, edited by famous photographer Liu Xiangcheng and published by Shanghai People’s Publishing House Guangqi Bookstore, was officially released in Shanghai.
Liu Xiangcheng, the author of "Shanghai: A Portrait of a World City", said that this book has carefully selected 141 photographs, showing the achievements made by Shanghai since the reform and opening up, especially since Pudong’s development and opening up, and visually interpreting the face of China as a "world city", which has the significance of interpreting history and responding to the times. Liu Xiangcheng said that Shanghai has become a "world city" in two aspects. One is the earth-shaking changes in architecture, and the other is the unique spirit of Shanghainese. Shanghai wants to build the best city in the world. This is the feeling of living in Shanghai for seven years.

This book records many highlights in the past 30 years with a lens. Among them, Shangsheng Xinsuo, No.1 Oriental One of Zhongxing Road, Anting New Town and other projects also appeared, which recorded Vanke’s development with Shanghai in the past 30 years. Vanke entered Shanghai in 1991, and has left many works in the 30 years of synchronous development with the city, and has gradually changed from a builder of urban space to a builder, operator and server of urban space.
After the completion of large-scale urban development, Shanghai’s development has gradually shifted from "demolition to stay" to "stay to be demolished", and the era of flexible urban organic renewal has arrived. The Shangsheng Xinsuo recorded by Liu Xiangcheng’s lens is Vanke’s social works that left memories for this era. In 2018, based on the principle of "keeping the old as it is, preserving its truth", after the transformation of Vanke, Shangsheng New Institute will be transformed from a closed place into a creative park that is open 24 hours a day. Whether it is a crowded shack bookstore or a naval club that holds various exhibitions and performances, it will become a new imprint of the times.
Higher quality development and temperature renewal are new topics for cities in this era. In addition to Shangsheng Xinsuo, the renovation of old blocks has always been an important practice of Vanke in Shanghai, including the renovation of some public spaces in Xinhua Road Street and the restoration of the fifth printing house of Jing ‘an District Commercial Press. In 2020, Shanghai Vanke released the "Xing" plan, which will renovate and update the Zhongxing City plate located in Jing ‘an District with a total area of about 1 million square meters, and help Jing ‘an District realize the key task of "the core area of an international cultural metropolis" in the 14 th Five-Year Plan.
During the round-table talks at the press conference, Professor college of architecture and urban planning and Academician Zheng Shiling of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that Shanghai should not only build an outstanding global city, but also cultivate outstanding "global urbanites". Shanghai has made a lot of efforts in protecting historical buildings and culture, while "world cities" have biodiversity and cultural diversity, which reflects such a development trend.

Today, Shanghai is making rapid and high-quality progress on the road of building an outstanding global city. Vanke’s exploration and speculation on the future city has never stopped. On August 18, 2021, the Shanghai Municipal Government and Vanke signed a strategic framework agreement, which will deepen cooperation in the construction of flagship projects of "future cities", the innovative practice of comprehensive management of "property cities", the organic renewal of cities, the development of housing leasing industry, and the application of building science and technology. Zhang Haitao, chief architect of Shanghai Vanke, said that in this album, architecture becomes the background of people, and people’s existence is more real, which is the core content of a city.
Just like the book Shanghai: A Portrait of a World City from 1991 to 2021, the imprint of each era is worth recording. In the image of the next era, there will be more fellow travelers painting portraits of the city tomorrow.
